FAQ

EDUCATIONFrequently Asked Questions

1
WHAT DOES A WATER SOFTENER DO?

A water softener removes minerals like calcium and magnesium from your water, which cause hard water. This helps prevent scale buildup in pipes and appliances, makes cleaning easier, and leaves your skin and hair feeling softer.

2
HOW DO I KNOW IF I HAVE HARD WATER?

Common signs include white buildup on faucets, spots on dishes, dry skin, dull hair, and appliances wearing out quickly. You can also have your water tested to know exactly how hard it is.

3
HOW MUCH DOES A WATER SOFTENER COST?

Prices vary depending on the size of your home and water usage. At Llewellyn Plumbing, we offer high-quality softeners and transparent pricing—with options for installation, warranties, and ongoing support.

4
WHAT SIZE WATER SOFTENER DO I NEED?

It depends on your household size and water hardness. We help determine the right system based on your water usage and test results.

5
HOW OFTEN DO I NEED TO ADD SALT

Most homeowners add salt every 1 to 2 months, depending on the system and water usage. We’ll show you exactly how to monitor it.

6
DO I NEED A SOFT WATER LOOP TO INSTALL ONE?

No, but having a loop makes installation quicker and cleaner. If your home doesn’t have one, we can install the necessary plumbing.

7
CAN I DRINK SOFTENED WATER?

Yes, but some people prefer to leave the kitchen cold tap unsoftened. We can customize your setup however you like.

8
HOW LONG DOES INSTALLATION TAKE?

Most installs take just a few hours. We’ll schedule a time that works for you and leave your home clean when we’re done.

What is a Soft Water Loop?

A soft water loop is a specially designed section of your home’s plumbing system that allows a water softener to treat most of the water used in your home—except for the outside hose bibs and often the kitchen cold tap. This setup ensures your showers, laundry, and appliances get the benefits of soft water, while keeping untreated water available for drinking and watering your yard.

If your home is already pre-plumbed with a soft water loop (common in many newer homes), it means you’re all set to have a water softener installed with minimal effort. If you don’t have a loop yet, no problem—our team can install one for you as part of your softener installation.

Installing a water softener on a loop helps:

  • Extend the life of your appliances
  • Prevent hard water scale buildup
  • Make cleaning easier
  • Improve the feel of your skin and hair
